Cellist JW Turner performs at Appalachian Nov. 13

Cellist JW Turner will perform Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center's Recital Hall at Appalachian State University. Turner is an assistant professor of music theory at Winston-Salem State University.

The program is comprised of works for solo cello: William Pfaff's "Elegy," Matthew Gold's "Meditation on a Handel Aria," Bruce Mahin's "Waves of Amber" and Klaus G. Roy's "Serenade for Cello Solo, Op. 62."

Turner has pursued careers in teaching and performance, serving on the faculties of Whitman College, Guilford College, the Greensboro College and UNC Pembroke.
He is a frequent guest of the New Horizons concert series at Radford University, has performed at conferences for the College Music Society and the Southeast Composers League, and showcases chamber music of regional composers as the artistic director of the WSSU concert series, New Music Revelations.

Appalachian Glee Club performs Nov. 13

Works for male singers are featured during the Nov. 13 performance of the Appalachian Glee Club at Appalachian State University. The free performance begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center's Rosen Concert Hall.

The 51-member group is directed by Jason Thompson. Piano accompaniment is provided by Rodney Ward and Ann Miles.

The group will sing Aaron Copland's "Zion Walls arranged by Glen Kopenen, "Oh, How Can I Keep From Singing" by  Robert A. Harris and arranged by David Lohman, Noah F. Ryder's "Love Song," "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" by William Steffe and arranged by Peter J. Wilhousky, "Rainbow 'Roun My Shoulder" arranged by Robert DeCormier and "Behold Man" byRon Nelson. The vocal ensemble What's Yer Pleasure will perform "Africa" and "Fare Thee Well Love."
The program concludes with the traditional performance of "Brothers, Sing On!"

Works for saxophone performed Nov. 15

Classical and contemporary works for saxophone will be featured during a Nov. 15 performance at Appalachian State University. The program begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center's Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The program includes Jean-Baptiste Singelée's "Allegro de Concert," the Welsh lullaby "Suo Gan," Bart Howard's "Fly Me to the Moon," Percy Grainger's "Irish Tune from County Derry" and "Shepherd's Hey," Arcangelo Corelli's "Sonata da chiesa, Op 3, No. 2" and Ronald L. Caravan's "Jubilate!"

Scott Kallestad directs the musicians.

String chamber music performed Nov. 17

Student string musicians in Appalachian State University's Hayes School of Music will perform chamber works for string ensembles Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center's Recital Hall.
The musicians are coached by Nancy Bargerstock, Eric Koontz and Kenneth Lurie.
The program includes Hummel's "String Trio," the allegro from Mozart's "String Quintet No. 4 in G minor K. 516," Beethoven's "Duo: For Two Eyeglasses Obligato," the allegro from Beethoven's "Quartet in f minor, op. 95" and two movements from Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Quintet for Piano and Strings."

Cellist Grace Anderson performs Nov. 20

Grace Anderson will present a cello recital Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center's Recital Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free.

Anderson is founder and artistic director of the Triad Chamber Music Society, which brings performers to the N.C. Piedmont Triad. She also maintains an active teaching studio and directs the Young Performers' Chamber Music Workshop.
She received her bachelor's degree from Harvard University, a master's degree from the Juilliard School and a doctorate from UNC Greensboro.  She was a protégée of Fred Sherry, a pioneer of contemporary music, and Bernard Greenhouse, founding member of the Beaux Arts Trio.

She also studied under the "father of all cellists," Pablo Casals.

Anderson has performed as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician in major concert halls throughout the United States and Europe, including the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Bargemusic, Alice Tully Hall and Merkin Concert Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center. She has performed at Caramoor International Music Festival, and music festivals in Canada, Holland, Germany, France and Croatia.

Her Nov. 20 recital features Bach's "Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 3 in C major, BWV 1009," Gaspar Cassadó's "Suite for cello solo," Mark O'Connor's "Appalachia Waltz" and Zoltán Kodály's "Sonata for solo cello, Op. 8."
