The young talent of the Appalachian State University Opera Theatre will perform Amahl and the Night Visitors Nov. 19-22.

The performances will take place in Rosen Concert Hall in the Broyhill Music Center at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Originally debuted for television in 1951, Amahl and the Night Visitors became a Christmas tradition and was aired annually by NBC from 1951 until 1966. The talented vocalists of the Hayes School of Music will perform this English opera centered on the life of a concerned mother and her crippled son, Amahl. In a heartwarming testament of faith and assurance, the family’s misfortune is suddenly altered by an unexpected visit from three kings in search of an infant savior. Conveying a universal message of hope, the performance will display the talent of Appalachian State University and provide a taste of the holidays for all ages.

The opera workshop is being instructed by Dr. Joseph Amaya, who obtained a music education degree from the State University of New York and a master’s and doctorate of music in voice from Florida State University. Enjoying a successful performance career of his own, Amaya has worked under professional management in New York City with The Metropolitan Opera and has toured the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Guided by various talents, the Appalachian State University Opera Theatre hopes to share this emotional story with a younger generation, while bringing back the nostalgic memories of older generations. This event encourages audience members to remember that the holiday season is a time for giving; therefore, attending families are encouraged to bring canned foods for “Amahl’s Bread Box.” Canned foods will be collected at all of the performances and distributed to the Hunger and Health Coalition. All are invited to begin the holiday season with family, friends and the gifted vocal students of the Appalachian State University Opera Theatre as they present Amahl and the Night Visitors.
