NOVEMBER IS ADOPT A SENIOR ANIMAL MONTH While cute little
puppies and kittens are often the first to capture your attention when considering adding a new
pet to your household, adopting an older animal has its advantages. As with humans, age
cultivates a mature perspective on life in animals too. Older animals are generally past the
destructive tendencies of their youth and adolescence. Their cumulative experiences--and
with shelter animals, these experiences are often heartbreaking--incline them toward respect and
gratitude. They will enter your household already housebroken, and simply appreciative to
have a loving home and a warm bed. November is Adopt A Senior Animal Month at the Watauga Humane
Society. All shelter animals aged 3 years or older qualify for the discounted adoption rate of $55
for cats and $75 for dogs. The discounted adoption rate still provides our full range of
valuable benefits as itemized on our website www.wataugahumanesociety.org Visit our website
to view the many senior animals currently available for adoption, or stop by our shelter at 200
Casey Lane (at the end of Greenway Trail) to meet our seniors. Hours: Tuesday through Friday
12:30 pm until 6:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday 12:30 pm until 5:00 pm, closed on Monday. For
more information, call 828/264-7865.

NC TOBACCO RESEARCH CHECK-OFF REFERENDUM The
Watauga County Cooperative Extension has released information about the NC Tobacco Research
Check-Off Referendum to be held on November 19, 2009. Karee Mackey, Interim County Extension
Director, said that the Watauga County Cooperative Extension office at 971 West King Street in Boone
will be the polling location for Watauga County. Ms. Mackey explained that the referendum is being
held to let tobacco growers decide if they wish to continue the self-assessment program.
This program has been in place since 1991, and the law requires that a new referendum be held
every six years. A 2/3 favorable vote will mean that growers are willing to continue to assess
themselves to support tobacco research and education. The assessment is ten cents per
hundred pounds of tobacco produced in North Carolina. The check-off funds, about $300,000
annually, is collected at buying stations by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and
Consumer Services and then allocated by the NC Tobacco Research Commission to support research and
Extension projects for tobacco at NC State University. For more information on the
referendum and projects funded by the check-off, please go to:
