Thursday, Nov. 19
Food networking and ‘Fresh' screening
High Country Locavore, Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture and Slow Food of the High Country are teaming together to host a night of local food networking, including two screenings of the recently released film "Fresh."  The screenings will take place at the DragonFly Theater and Pub in Boone on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets will be $10 each and will be available  at the DragonFly Theater. Space is limited for each screening.  The DragonFly Theater is an independently owned movie theater, which enjoys supporting socially responsible events.
 

International community development
Information about ICDI (international service-learning courses and service-based internships) in both southern India and South Africa will be discussed from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the New River Room at the Plemmons Student Union on the ASU campus.


China's Challenges & World Prosperity
A forum on "China's Challenges & World Prosperity" will feature four major challenges facing China, each addressed by one of the Chinese visiting scholars on the Appalachian State campus this semester. The forum will be held from 6:30-8  p.m. in the Calloway Peak in the Plemmons Student Union at Appalachian State University.


Film on Adolf Hitler
The movie "Downfall German: It's the last days of Adolf Hitler," will be shown at 7 and 9:30 p.m. in I.G. Greer Auditorium on the ASU campus. The showings are free. It's April 1945, and Hitler's personal secretary Traudl Junge  finds herself in the Der Fuhrer's bunker. Facing inevitable defeat, Hitler's moods range from defiance to fight or flee, remain loyal or opt for self-preservation. 


Film ‘Wittgenstein"
In conjunction with World Philosophy Day, on Nov. 19 in room 114 of ASU's Belk Library will be a 7:30 p.m. student presentation followed by film "Wittgenstein" by Derek Jarman (1993). High Country Cyclocross Series
High Country Cyclocross Series features weeknight off-road bicycle racing at the fully lighted High Country Fairgrounds. "It's great for beginners and kids," a spokesperson said. It's held  6-9 p.m. every Thursday through Nov. 19 at the High Country Fairgrounds, 748 Roby Greene Road, Boone. Red Cross blood drive
The Watauga County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive on Thursday, Nov. 19,  from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Caldwell Community College, located  at 2887 U.S. Hwy. 421 North. Contact Diane Mazze at 267-2185 for an appointment.


Avery County Rotary Club

Tobacco Research Check-Off Referendum
The N.C. Tobacco Research Check-Off Referendum will be held on Nov. 19.  The Watauga County Cooperative Extension office at 971 West King St. in Boone will be the polling location for Watauga. The referendum is being held to let tobacco growers decide if they wish to continue the self-assessment program.  This program has been in place since 1991, and the law requires that a new referendum be held every six years. A two-thirds favorable vote will mean that growers are willing to continue to assess themselves to support tobacco research and education. Friday, Nov. 20
Mistletoe Market
The fifth annual Mistletoe Market will be held at the Newland Volunteer Fire Department on Friday, Nov. 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be gift ideas, door prizes, and light refreshments. The Young Earth Society
The Young Earth Society will be presenting Robert Gentry in a lecture forum at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, at the High Country Home Builder's Association Building on the N.C. 105 Bypass in Boone. His topic will be claims of the young age of the Earth, as revealed according to Gentry by radioactive halos. Gentry is a nuclear physicist and has tested evolutionary models of Earth's origins and age while working at Oak Ridge Laboratory in Maryville, Tenn. His papers have been published in Science and Nature magazines. "Christian students are especially invited to this lecture," a spokesperson said. Educational leadership fall symposium
The Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership symposium will feature a  set of presentations and audience discussions about the vital role of international education for North Carolina, and the role of North Carolina in international education. The event will be from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. in the Reich College of Education, room 3, on the ASU campus.


International Café
International Café, an annual event sponsored by International Appalachian at ASU, will be held with food and talent from all over the world. The event is from 6 to 11  p.m. in Blue Ridge Ballroom of the Plemmons Student Union on the ASU campus.


 ‘Seven Samurai'
The film, "Seven Samurai" ( Japanese) takes place in warring states period in Japan (around 1587-1588). It follows the story of a village of farmers that hire seven masterless samurai (ronin) to combat bandits who will return after the harvest to steal their crops. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Greenbriar Theater on the ASU campus and is free  and open to the public.


Saturday, Nov. 21
High Country Fiber Guild
Are you are a former student of Miss Struthers' weaving class at Cove Creek High School?  If so, you are invited to join members of the High Country Fiber Guild on Saturday, Nov. 21, to celebrate her teaching and share stories about her class. "Please bring any weavings you have that were made in her class," a spokesperson for the group said. The meeting will be held at the Western Watauga Community Center's weaving room at 9:30 a.m.


Old Appalachian Wrestling Invitational
The Watauga High School wrestling team will be hosting the eighth annual Old Appalachian Wrestling Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 21. The tournament will begin at 9  a.m. at Watauga High School. Tickets for this all-day event are $10 and will be available at the door. This tournament is held in honor of past Watauga High School wrestlers. Any previous wrestlers who would like to attend should call Dwain Henson at 964-1934 for free admission to the tournament. 


Relay For Life Holiday Bazaar
The Howard's Creek Baptist Church Searchers Relay For Life Team will be sponsoring a Holiday Bazaar and Bake Sale on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.   at the Three Forks Baptist Association Building located on N.C. 194 north, just one-half mile from New Market Centre, on the left. Items will include ornaments, gift baskets, holiday décor, etc., as well as homemade jams/jellies and baked goods. Sausage gravy and biscuits will be served for breakfast, and hot dogs will be served for lunch. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.


Holiday Market
The Boone Service League will be hosting its annual Holiday Market on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the National Guard Armory from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost of admission is $3,  or $1  with two canned goods that can be donated to the Watauga County Hunger Coalition. There will be a variety of goods that include skin care products, stationary, baked goods, pottery, jewelry, arts and crafts, and items for the home. Advent Festival
Advent Festival (an alternative holiday shopping event) will be held at the High Country United Church of Christ in Vilas Saturday, Nov. 21, from 9  a.m. until 2  p.m. Activities will include entertainment, snacks, making ornaments (kids and adults) and advent wreaths, decorating cookies, yoga and dulcimer lessons and "shopping for the perfect gift purchased from a member of our church or community." Those who are interested in having a booth can contact the church. Vendors  include: Lynn Townsend – photography/nightlights; Mary Ferrell – crafts; Loretta Link – pottery; Lauri Whyte – yoga session; Sondra Edwards – dulcimer lesson; Gale Buchanan – ornaments  for kids; advent wreaths – Bernie Edwards; Graham Ferrell – supplying greenery for wreaths; Rosa Powers – Scandinavian heart ornaments; Joseph Bathanti – books; Sylvia and Kelly – crafts; Diane Lasey – T-shirts; and Laura Wolpert – a volunteer at the White Elephant Table.

New River State Park
A program on "Caution! White Tail Deer!" will be presented Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at New River State Park in Ashe County. Join a park ranger to learn about the whitetail  deer,  and look at ways to decrease vehicle/deer accidents. Meet at the U.S. 221 access Visitor Center. Mount Jefferson State Natural Area
Mount Jefferson State Natural Area in Ashe County will hold a "Nature Hike" on  Saturday, Nov. 21.  Meet at the picnic shelter at 2 p.m. Get ready to go for a hike up on Mount Jefferson. The leaves are falling and the views are everywhere! Meet the ranger for a fall season nature hike to Luther Rock. Wear sturdy shoes. For more information or directions, call (336) 246-9653.

Hiking Club
The Chargers & Rechargers Hiking Club on Saturday, Nov. 21, will hike Story Teller Rock via the Tanawha, Daniel Boone Scout Trail, Cragway and the Nuwati; return via Nuwati and Tanawha trails. Bring a story to tell on the rock and a snack/lunch;  5.9 mile loop, rated moderate to strenuous. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Boone Fork parking area on the Blue Ridge Parkway. No dogs.
